Aaaaaand, another old picture done about a decade ago rescued from oblivion.
The F and L models were the only versions of the P-40 powered by a Packard-Merlin engine (licenced-built Rolls Royce) instead of the usual Allison V-1710 for better performances at high altitude, since the Allison engine seemed not allow for the instalation of a supercharger.
As seen from outside, the main difference between a Packard-powered and an Allison-powered P-40 lies in that the former lacks the carburator air intake on top of the fuselage.

This reminds me of an old made for TV move called "Death Race" with Lloyd Bridges. It was about a pair of P-40's in the desert. One got shot down and the other landed to save the pilot and was damaged by a German panzer. The tank commander (Bridges) chased the aircraft across the desert. I haven't seen the movie in a long time, but this pic reminded me of that. Thanks!
